Dexmeditomidine is an alpha-2 agonist that works at the presynaptic junction to prevent the release of catecholamines. This action is desirable when there is a need to control blood pressure and hyper dynamic responses. This presentation demonstrates a retrospective study that examined a large group of patients (791) undergoing outpatient rhytidectomy with total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). The effort was made in these cases to avoid endotracheal intubation and inhalation anesthesia. This study attempted to answer the question, “is dexmedetomidine the ideal adjunct when utilizing TIVA?”. The study showed favorable effects of dexmeditomidine when utilized during TIVA. The results of the study will be reviewed during the presentation.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss pharmacology of dexmedetomidine.
Describe the use of dexmedetomidine as an adjunct in administration of a total intravenous anesthetic.
Examine the utilization of dexmedetomidine for facelift surgery and maintenance of hemodynamic stability
