Dr. Mark W. Newton, MD, FAAP is a professor and pediatric anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (USA) and has lived and worked in East Africa with his wife, Sue, and five children for the last 23 years. He is the Director of Global Anesthesiology and Development at Vanderbilt and has been involved in developing education programs in Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Zambia. These multinational programs have been in partnerships with Ministries of Health, local leaders, and universities in each country. He has been instrumental in the development of simulation centers in three countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia). He has also developed with African colleagues a mobile simulation program called MOST (Mobile Obstetrical Simulation Team Training) and implemented at multiple hospitals in six countries in East Africa. He has been instrumental in starting the Kenya Registured Nurse Anesthesia (KRNA) Program in Africa and was a leader in the development of nurse anesthesia education in three additional countries.
